Reflection: The M1 Mac Mini is the best value desktop Mac that Apple has made in years. In fact, it may very well be the best value desktop released in 2020. It packs an Apple M1 SoC, up to 16GB of unified memory, and very fast Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 connectivity. While this may seem like plenty to the common user, there's a glaring omission when it comes to professional use, especially for those who utilize high-speed network storage: the built-in ethernet port is only 1 Gigabit. Many high-speed storage servers use 10 Gigabit connections to provide blazing fast read & write speeds for workflows like video editing. This means that the Mac Mini wouldn't be able to fully utilize the high-speed connection without a (problematic) Thunderbolt hub. Fortunately, Apple has now announced the new 10 Gigabit version of the Mac Mini, which will cost $100 more than the base model and should fill the needs of many creative professionals around the world.
