Reflection: One of the major events outlined by this article is the passing of Executive Order #8802 and the situation our country was in at the time. America was gearing up for war in Europe, and President Roosevelt detailed four freedoms for all: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Since most Black people didn't have those freedoms at the time, A. Philip Randolph threatened to organize a protest on "segregation and discrimination in the armed forces and defense industries." This threat prompted the signing of Order #8802, which banned discrimination in the armed forces and ushered in a new era of the civil rights movement.
