Reflection: This article describes the causes & effects of World War II on the world, and how most countries were either directly involved or affected in some way by this devastating event. One thing I found interesting about this article was how much artillery the Nazi powers actually had. For example, they had 442 machine guns, which was much more than all the Allied nations combined. Another interesting piece of information is that German U-boats numbered up to 240 at one point, and they sank over 630,000 tons of shipping in just one month. This absolutely debilitated the Allied powers in Europe who relied on these supplies. After a while, though, the Allied ground & air powers were able to defeat the Axis. +

Reflection: One of the major events outlined by this article is the passing of Executive Order #8802 and the situation our country was in at the time. America was gearing up for war in Europe, and President Roosevelt detailed four freedoms for all: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Since most Black people didn't have those freedoms at the time, A. Philip Randolph threatened to organize a protest on "segregation and discrimination in the armed forces and defense industries." This threat prompted the signing of Order #8802, which banned discrimination in the armed forces and ushered in a new era of the civil rights movement. +
