Reflection: This article details the history & heritage of the African American population in the United States. It goes into special detail on the many plights that have been faced by Black people, such as slavery, racism, and police violence. I learned a lot about the Civil Rights Movement, and how WWII contributed to its growth throughout the country. I also thought that the article did a great job at highlighting the disproportionate impacts of the Great Depression & the following commodity shortages on Black people compared to the reast of the population. +

Reflection: The CEO of productivity company Basecamp sent out an internal blog post which informed employees that they would no longer be allowed to openly share their “societal and political discussions” at work. Many employees were disgruntled by this blog post, and proceeded to announce that they were leaving the company. About 20 employees (34% of the workforce) have already resigned, including the head of design, head of marketing, and head of customer service. The entire iOS app development team has also chosen to resign over this decision. One employee's tweet reads:

"After 7 years, today is my last day at Basecamp. I plan on taking a little time off, but if anyone is looking for an iOS engineer, I would love to chat, my DMs are open."

This situation has sparked concern, since the CEOs banning political discussions are primarily white males, and many issues being discussed relate to BLM and LGBTQ rights movements. In my opinion, it is important to draw the line for political discussions somewhere, but Basecamp's decision seems particularly harsh and uncalled for. + Link

Reflection: The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a monumental event that sparked a revolution in civil rights during the 20th century. The boycott of public bus transportation lasted over one year, starting in December 1955 and ending in December 1956. This boycott also caused unrest & contention with white supremacist groups like the KKK; many Black homes & meeting places were bombed and shot at in response to the protest. This boycott also helped put Martin Luther King, Jr. into a central role in the Civil Rights Movement, as he was one of the most prominent leaders in the boycott & the following protests across the country. +

Reflection: Jim Crow laws existed in many forms throughout the post-Civil War era up till 1968. This article looks into how they impacted Black people across the country and how many people organized boycotts & protests to fight back against them. Even though these laws were officially abolished in 1968 by the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and Fair Housing Act, they continued to exist in many locations across the Southern United States. A prime example of this is the U.S. Justice System, which has been shown to favor white people over other racial groups (especially African Americans). +
